Tucked beside the leafy Linear Park Trail in Hindmarsh, this delightful sculpture captures more than just the sunlight—he captures hearts. Meet Old Man Rakali, a charming bronze-and-wood figure paddling gently through time, created by talented South Australian artist Clancy Warner and inspired by the nearby River Torrens / Karrawirra Parri.
Old Man Rakali pays tribute to the rakali, Australia’s native water rat—an amphibious mammal who makes its home along our rivers and wetlands. Once on the brink of extinction, this remarkable creature is now thriving thanks to conservation efforts, and this sculpture is a quiet celebration of its resilience.
With his steady oars and focused gaze, Old Man Rakali invites us to pause, appreciate our local environment, and rediscover the stories that flow through our city’s veins.
Did you know?
Rakali are large native rodents and one of only two amphibious mammals in our waterways (the other being the platypus).
They have webbed feet, thick water-repellent fur, and love to forage along riverbanks.
Often mistaken for common rats, they’re in fact a protected and vital part of our natural ecosystem.
