Writer's picture: JulieJulie

Nestled in the heart of South Australia, Wirrabara is a charming forestry town with a proud history and an artistic soul. Among its many attractions, the Wirrabara Silo Art stands as a breathtaking tribute to the area’s natural beauty and community spirit.

The Story Behind the Masterpiece

Created in October 2018 by Melbourne-based street artist SMUG (Sam Bates), this award-winning mural celebrates Wirrabara’s unique connection to nature and forestry. The focal point of the artwork is the red-capped robin (Petroica goodenovii), a rare bird native to the region. SMUG’s fascination with birds shines through in the intricate details and vibrant colors of this stunning creation.

🏆 Awards and RecognitionThe Wirrabara Silo Art won the Award of Merit – Regional Category 2019, presented by the Australian Civic Trust Incorporated. This recognition highlights the artistry and community collaboration behind the project, which was initiated by the District Council of Mount Remarkable and the passionate locals.

The mural, painted over 20 days, combines house paint and spray paint to create a masterpiece that feels alive with energy and symbolism. Standing in front of the silos, you’ll be awestruck by the scale and beauty of the art, which reflects the essence of Wirrabara’s heritage and people.
