Recently, while on a bike ride through Mile End (one of many great cycling routes in SA!), I stumbled upon an unusual sight—a small section of old train tracks embedded in a footpath, disappearing beneath a sealed road.
Curious, I started researching and uncovered a fascinating piece of South Australia’s transport history.
Back in the day, Mile End was a major railway hub. Goods from Port Adelaide would arrive here by train before being distributed across regional SA. Likewise, South Australia’s rich farming produce was transported into the city and shipped around the world. The small section of rail I found was once connected to a larger goods yard, playing a vital role in the state's agricultural and commercial economy.
One particularly interesting discovery—the very building near these tracks was once the S.A. Dairy Farmers Co-operative factory! This site processed dairy products, likely receiving milk and goods via train before being distributed locally and beyond. Today, it has taken on a new identity, but the remnants of its past are still there if you know where to look!
The past is all around us! Photos from the State Library of SA show how much the area has changed, but little clues like this tiny train track can still tell big stories.
History is waiting to be discovered—sometimes right under your feet! Next time you see something unusual in the landscape, take a moment to look into it. You never know what stories of South Australia’s past you might uncover!
