Step back in time to discover the rich history of the Jacka Brothers Brewery in Melrose, a site that has evolved over the years, offering a glimpse into South Australia’s past. 🍺
Originally starting life as a flour mill, the Jacka Brothers transformed the property into a brewery in 1877, where it became a cornerstone of the community, providing locally brewed beer until it closed its doors in 1934. After the brewery's closure, a local farmer, Geoff Slee, took ownership of the property for many years, a prominent local farmer and landholder known for his sheep and wheat farming. Geoff's family’s influence is still felt in Melrose today, where traces of the Slee legacy are visible throughout the town.
A recent visit to one of the local pubs even uncovered an old photo of Charles Slee (Geoff’s late father)—just one example of how old photos can lead us to fascinating stories about Melrose’s past.
Now, the brewery has changed ownership again and has undergone significant restoration, preserving its history while creating a fresh experience for visitors. 🌳✨
Melrose is filled with other historical gems, from stunning red gum trees lit up at night to the iconic cart wheel nearby. The town offers plenty of scenic walks and beautiful landscapes, making it a perfect place to reflect on the past while enjoying the present.
