History Friday: Letters from Australia – An Immersive Cornish-Australian Story

Writer's picture: JulieJulie

Adelaide Fringe is always full of surprises, and this year we had the pleasure of experiencing “Letters from Australia”—a breathtaking, immersive 360-degree production that transported us back to the 1860s. We were lucky enough to meet a couple of the masterminds behind this historical experience, who traveled all the way from Cornwall, England, to Adelaide to launch it. Their passion for history and storytelling was infectious!

The production is based on recently discovered letters written home by two Cornish boys, Thomas and William Osborne, who emigrated from West Cornwall to Australia in 1864. These letters, passed down through four generations, capture their longing for home, their struggles in a new land, and their determination to build a future using their mining and farming skills. Their words are brought to life through stunning visuals and compelling lyrics, immersing the audience in the emotional journey of these letters.

In the 19th century, as tin prices plunged and famine struck Cornwall, 250,000 people left in search of better opportunities. Many settled in South Australia, where today, approximately 10% of the population has Cornish ancestry, and areas are still affectionately called ‘Little Cornwall.’ The Cornish brought more than just their skills—they carried their culture, traditions, and deep chapel faith, shaping the communities they became part of.

Martin Eddy, the 2x great-grandson of John Charles Osborne and custodian of these letters, inherited them from his aunt. Faced with the challenge of deciphering the difficult cursive handwriting and cross-writing, he turned to local historians for help. A conversation with creative designer Dave Hotchkiss and composer Nick Hart sparked the idea for an immersive film, bringing these heartfelt letters to life in an extraordinary way.

This Australian premiere is a must-see for history lovers, storytelling enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to experience the power of personal letters in an age of instant communication. It’s screening at the Electric Dreams Dome at the Dom Polski Centre (230 Angas Street, Adelaide) until March 23rd. A special shoutout to 88.7 Adelaide's Coast FM & Rob for his fantastic interview with Martin this week, diving even deeper into this incredible story!
