History Friday - Look up when you are in the City of Adelaide........

Take a step back to 1920 on Rundle Street, Adelaide

Look at "The Grand" on the right – an iconic piece of history!

Built in 1918 by Alfred Drake, a well-known hotelkeeper and athlete, this magnificent building was once a picture theatre.  Back then, it cost £20,000 to construct and could comfortably seat 1,100 movie-goers! With its polished cedar stairs and stylish dress circle, it was the place to be for the latest films.

The theatre was designed with the latest technology and ideas in cinema at the time. A 22-ft vestibule greeted patrons, and every seat had a perfect view of the screen.

Alfred Drake, originally from London, left an incredible mark on Adelaide before his passing in 1923. His legacy lives on through the architecture he gifted this city.

Isn’t it fascinating to think of the stories this building could tell?

Now, fast forward to 2024! Rundle Street has changed so much, yet this piece of Adelaide’s history remains. The Grand stands tall, (grey building), its façade still watching over the bustling street.

Look up and you’ll see the sign: “Erected by Alfred Drake 1918,” still visible on the grey exterior. These details remind us of the rich history that surrounds us every day in Adelaide.

Next time you’re exploring the City of Adelaide, look up – you never know what fascinating history is hiding on the side of an old building!
